Most photographs on this site come from Wikimedia Commons and are used under a licence that permits commercial use and adaptation — public domain, CC0, CC BY or CC BY-SA. They are listed first. Two shorter tables follow: photographs given to us by the businesses they show, and the handful of pictures that were generated rather than photographed. Sourced and checked in September 2026.

Photographs the venues gave us

14 of the restaurants, bars and hotels in this guide supplied a photograph of their own for their page here. Those pictures are not Commons files and carry no free licence: copyright stays with whoever took them, they were provided for use on this site only, and nobody should lift them from these pages. Where a venue is not in this table, its page still shows a Commons stand-in and the note in the long table below says what that stand-in actually is.

Five pictures are not photographs

Three are the portraits of our contributors, who are editorial personas rather than photographed people. The other two are the plates of chanfana and negalhos: no freely licensed photograph of either dish exists, and the only candidates were a sculpture of chanfana and a plate served in California. A generated plate of food claims nothing about a real place, so we made those two and say so here. No generated image on this site depicts a real place, building or street, and nothing else on the site is generated.

Where a picture is only approximately right

22 rows in the Commons table carry a note. Most are venues with no freely licensed photograph of their own, where the picture shows the street or square the place stands on. Three are blunter than that: the academic prison, where photography is restricted, shows the courtyard you cross to reach it; the road train shows the lower-town square rather than the train, because every free “tourist train” photo on Commons is from the Algarve; and the Passarelle picture is a general Coimbra street, not the club’s own square, because no source places its address in a named quarter. We would rather say that than let a caption imply something the picture does not show.

What we cannot photograph

One absence is not an oversight. Photography and filming are prohibited on the Noble Floor of the Joanina Library — the room the library is famous for. No freely licensed photograph of it exists, so the picture on that page is the middle floor.

The Commons photographs, in full

All 88 of them: the image key the page uses, the Commons file, the author exactly as Commons states it, the licence, and a note wherever the picture is not of the exact thing the page is about.
