Restaurants in Coimbra
Browse by cuisine, neighbourhood and price. Every table here was chosen for the food, not the ranking.
Coimbra eats well and publishes almost nothing about it. Most houses here have no menu online, no price and no website, and two of the best known carry conflicting street numbers between sources we otherwise trust. Every page below states what is on the record and leaves the rest blank rather than filling it in.
Traditional

A Cozinha da Maria
One named writer calls its chanfana the best she has eaten. Two reputable sources put the restaurant on two different streets, so read this before you walk.

Adega Paço do Conde
One address in the Baixa and almost nothing else on the record. What an adega is, how to order at one, and an honest account of what nobody publishes.

Solar do Bacalhau
A Baixa restaurant named after one fish, on the street where Coimbra eats. Almost nothing about it is published, so this page tells you how to order instead.

Taberna Casa Costa
The cheaper of the city’s two documented chanfana addresses: a tavern on Rua Augusto Filipe Simões, banded €, with almost nothing else on the record.

Zé Manel dos Ossos
Seven tables in a blind alley, walls papered with customers’ notes, and a queue by noon. Thirty years of the same menu and no reservations worth the name.

Zé Neto
A Rua das Azeiteiras tasca that the city ties to chanfana, though nobody has published it. What is on the record, and the question to ask at the door.
Tapas

Dux — Taberna Urbana
Modern petiscos in the lower town: caramelised goat cheese with honey, prawn açorda, squid with aioli. Two sources give two house numbers, four doors apart.

Fangas Mercearia Bar
A grocery-bar on the street that climbs to the Alta, serving Portuguese small plates. Almost nothing about it is published, so this page explains the format instead.
Fine dining

Arcadas
Coimbra’s most ambitious kitchen, in an 18th-century palace across the river. Estate produce, a house wine named for the legend, and no star we are willing to print.

Refeitório da Baixa
The contemporary kitchen in the lower town: tuna ceviche, confit cod and rice dishes from the Mondego. The top price band in the Baixa, and no published figures.
Specialities

João dos Leitões
Suckling pig and pork sandwiches at a Coimbra address, for a dish that belongs 20 km north in the Bairrada. Cheap, honest, and not a local speciality.

Loggia
Two food writers call this the best view in Coimbra. It sits inside a national museum that has been closed since February 2026, and nobody publishes whether it trades.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need to book restaurants in Coimbra?
Mostly you cannot — several of the best-known houses publish no booking system at all. Arrive at the start of service instead: 12:30 for lunch, 19:00 or 19:30 for dinner. Zé Manel dos Ossos has seven tables and a queue outside by noon.
