Largo da Sé Velha is the best square in Coimbra and it is not close. A fortified Romanesque cathedral begun in 1164 on one side, stepped lanes running off it in three directions, and in the evening the bars around it filling with students, professors and residents in roughly equal measure. Serenata Hostel is at numbers 21 and 23, which is to say on the square itself, with a view of the cathedral from the property.
The building has had two previous lives worth knowing about. It is early twentieth century, and it housed first the Instituto da Maternidade Bissaya Barreto and later the Conservatório de Música de Coimbra before being fully restored as a hostel. A music conservatory on the square where the students sing their serenades is a coincidence too neat to pass over — and the hostel’s name comes from the same tradition.
The address is the product
Understand what you are buying. Coimbra’s sights are concentrated on one hill, and this building sits in the middle of them.
The Sé Velha is across the square, 3.00 EUR to go inside. The Joanina Library and the Paço das Escolas are a short climb up the ridge. The stepped Rua do Quebra-Costas starts below the square and runs down through the Arco de Almedina into the lower town.
The hostel states that its address sits within the UNESCO World Heritage site, and given the 2013 inscription covers the Alta, that is consistent rather than promotional.
The consequence is that you can do Coimbra without transport. The whole monument circuit is on foot from this door, and the walk that most visitors dread — the climb from the Baixa — is something you do once with your bag rather than four times a day.
What kind of hostel this is
Not a dorms-only backpacker operation, which matters if the word hostel is putting you off.
The property runs dorms, double and twin rooms, and private suites. Showers and bathrooms are shared in the dorm areas. Rooms have air conditioning, and some have an LCD television and a private bathroom.
That configuration makes it a genuine option for couples and for solo travellers who want a private room in the best-located building on the hill, rather than a bunk. In a city where the Alta’s other accommodation is boutique-priced, that is a real gap being filled.

The noise question
Be honest with yourself about this one, because the address that makes the hostel excellent also makes it loud.
Frommer’s describes the bars on and around Largo da Sé Velha as packed with students, professors and locals, and recommends moving between them rather than picking one. That activity is directly outside. Julie Dawn Fox separately warns that the Alta can be noisy during university term.
Then there is the academic calendar proper. The Queima das Fitas in May runs eight days and its centrepiece is the Serenata Monumental — a midnight fado serenade on the steps of the cathedral across this square. The Latada does something similar in late September and early October.
If you came for that, this is the single best address in Portugal to experience it from. If you came to sleep, pick different dates or a different quarter.
Who should book it
Solo travellers. The best-located bed in Coimbra at the lowest tier of pricing, on a square that is sociable every evening. This is the obvious answer.
Couples on a budget who want the Alta without boutique rates — the private suites and double rooms exist for exactly this.
Anyone here for the music. A former conservatory on the serenade square, minutes from À Capella in its 1364 chapel and from Fado ao Centro on the Quebra-Costas.
It does not suit families with small children, anyone with mobility limitations, or travellers with heavy luggage: the approaches are cobbled and stepped and the Elevador do Mercado stops at 21:00.
